Virtual Reality in foreign languages for Special Education Needs Students in VET schools

"<< Background >>We applied for the VIRTUAL SENS project to address the significant gap in engaging and effective educational practices for Special Educational Needs (SEN) students. Traditional teaching methods often do not adequately cater to the unique needs of these students, resulting in lower engagement and poorer learning outcomes. The project aimed to leverage innovative technologies like Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) to create immersive, inclusive, and engaging learning environments. By doing so, we sought to provide educators with the tools and skills needed to enhance the educational experiences and outcomes for SEN students, ensuring they receive quality education tailored to their needs.<< Objectives >>The primary objective of the VIRTUAL SENS project was to transform foreign language education for SEN students by integrating VR and AR technologies. We aimed to equip teachers with the skills and resources to create interactive and inclusive learning experiences. Specific objectives included raising awareness about the benefits of VR in education, developing practical educational resources, and enhancing the professional competencies of teachers. The project sought to make learning more engaging and effective for SEN students, ultimately improving their educational outcomes and inclusion within the classroom.<< Implementation >>The VIRTUAL SENS project implemented a variety of activities to achieve its objectives. Key activities included the development of the handbook ""VR in the Foreign Language Classroom,"" which provides comprehensive guidelines and best practices for integrating VR into teaching. We also created a VR Container featuring five carefully selected VR tools to enhance language learning. Training sessions for teachers were conducted in Romania and Italy, equipping 30 educators with practical skills and knowledge. Additionally, we created a 41-page training curriculum to support teachers in implementing VR tools in their classrooms. We organized dissemination events to share project results, held regular partner meetings to ensure effective project management, and continuously monitored progress through bi-monthly reviews and participant feedback.<< Results >>The VIRTUAL SENS project produced significant tangible outputs and achieved impactful results. We developed the 63-page handbook ""VR in the Foreign Language Classroom,"" translated into English, Romanian, and Italian, and created a VR Container with five curated VR tools. We also developed a comprehensive 41-page training curriculum to support teachers in using VR tools effectively. We trained 30 teachers in Romania and Italy, significantly enhancing their ability to use VR in their classrooms. The project successfully engaged over 2463 unique IP users through online platforms, with extensive dissemination efforts reaching numerous stakeholders. Feedback collected from participants was overwhelmingly positive, ensuring the project's sustainability and setting a foundation for future improvements and broader adoption of innovative educational practices for SEN students."
