WARM - WAste Reduction and Management by implementing circular economy in western africa

According to recent analysis, among the biggest weaknesses in Solid Waste Management (SWM) in Africa, the following are the most relevant: policy and standards not meeting ability of stakeholders (e.g., private sectors) and the lack of experts and staff who have technical knowledge and skills in SWM. In addition, the waste sector is undergoing a profound transformation in Europe and industrialised countries due to the introduction of new paradigms inspired by the circular economy, which aim to valorise waste as much as possible as a source of new materials or, at most, energy; transformations that require a proper transfer of knowledge of the SWM sector, especially in countries without sectoral regulations such as those in the Economy Community of West African States (ECOWAS) area. In this framework, the main aim of the WARM project is to contribute to modernise, improve the accessibility and to internationalise the higher education in the field of SWM and circular economy over the ECOWAS area. This aim will be achieved by establishing a strategic partnership among Universities, building capacity in the field of waste management and delivering a master course. This, will contribute to building the capacity of the local academic staff, as well as fittingly addressing training sessions towards targeted stakeholders in participating Partner countries on the topic of SWM from different sources.
