<< Background >>The ALiCE project addressed the need for a unified framework for formative assessment in citizenship education across Europe. It sought to assist teachers in designing learning activities and assessing students' multifaceted citizenship competences. The project responded to the challenges posed by diverse curricular objectives, context-specific interpretations of citizenship education, and a lack of tools to evaluate skills and attitudes effectively. << Objectives >>The primary goal of the project was to collaboratively develop a framework for formative assessment in citizenship education. This included mapping innovative practices, creating context-specific assessment tools, and empowering teachers to integrate these methods into their classrooms, thereby enhancing students' citizenship competences.<< Implementation >>ALiCE implemented several key activities, including:Developing four intellectual outputs: a comparative framework, an inventory of innovative practices, a repository of assessment methods, and a roadmap for schools.Conducting local and international training sessions for teachers.Engaging 50 associated schools across Europe to test and refine the tools and methods developed.Hosting two international training events in Sicily and the Czech Republic to build capacity for sustainable implementation.ALiCE was a unique collaboration between academic partners, educational guidance services, education providers and about 40 associated schools. U Lisboa (Portugal), Oslomet (Norway) and Karel de Grote Hogeschool (Flanders) took care of the academic part. AgSO (City schools of Antwerp - Flanders) and CIRPE (Centro Iniziative Ricerche e Programmazione economica - Italy) acted as education providers. Social Project Intititute (SPI - Lithuania), LUV ( Andragoski zavod Ljudska univerza Velenje - Slovenia), EC (Euroface Consult - Czech Republic) and NTC (National Training Center - Bulgaria) provided educational guidance to schools.<< Results >>The project produced several concrete outputs:A publication on citizenship education concepts and learning goals, and a survey identifying teachers' needs. An online inventory of innovative educational practices in citizenship education.A repository of formative assessment methods tailored to citizenship education.Recommendations for educational policies and a self-reflection tool for teachers, integrated into an online platform, along with a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), designed to be accessible to a large number of participants and to ensure sustainability and broader application.
