Farmers in Resilient Engagement for Wildfire Sustainability and Education

<< Background >>The FIREWISE project was developed to address the pressing challenges faced by the Thrace region, severely affected by recent devastating wildfires. These incidents exposed critical gaps in community preparedness, wildfire prevention knowledge, and management practices, significantly impacting local livelihoods, biodiversity, and the ecosystem. The project responds to the urgent need for targeted training and capacity building among farmers and livestock breeders—key stakeholders in the region's economic and environmental sustainability.Grounded in a robust needs analysis, FIREWISE seeks to:> Equip 100 local farmers with essential skills in wildfire prevention and management, fostering a frontline defense against future incidents.> Train10 wildfire ambassadors to disseminate best practices, strengthening community resilience.> Bridge local needs with global expertise through partnerships, introducing innovative practices to enhance local capabilities.<< Objectives >>The FIREWISE project aimed to enhance wildfire prevention and resilience in the Thrace region through targeted education, capacity building, and collaboration. Its objectives were:1.Educate 100 local farmers: Equip local farmers with wildfire prevention techniques and fire management skills, fostering a group capable of serving as the first line of defense in disaster prevention and preparedness.2.Train 10 local ambassadors: Develop a team of 10 farmers and stock breeders to act as wildfire ambassadors, responsible for disseminating knowledge and best practices within their communities. This initiative builds a resilient network with green skills, addressing climate change impacts.3.Partner with an international organization: Collaborate with experts in wildfire management, such as NAVRB, to facilitate knowledge exchange and enhance the training process. This objective ensures global insights enrich local practices, aligning with priorities for green skills development.4.Host two community engagement events: Organize events in Thrace focusing on wildfire prevention and education, consolidating learning and fostering dialogue, collaboration, and community action.<< Implementation >>The project implemented all the proposed activities of the initial proposal. 11 Activities were implemented.1 Needs assessment survey2 Workshops and training sessions3 Evaluation of the workshops4 Selection of ambassadors5 Resources for ambassadors6 Ambassadors visit7 Reporting of ambassador activities8 Compile educational materials9 Organization of 2 public events10 Project management11 Dissemination activities<< Results >>The FIREWISE project achieved several concrete results aligned with its objectives.
