Volunteering in Action

<< Background >>We initiated this project in response to COVID-19's emphasis on the need for socialization and volunteerism, especially among young people facing professional and personal growth anxieties. Recognizing volunteerism's role in fostering social inclusion, skills development, and civic engagement, our goal was to offer meaningful volunteering opportunities for youth. In Greece, where volunteering is still burgeoning, our project aimed to enhance youth employability and engagement through volunteer work. This approach not only aimed to address socio-economic challenges but also to empower young individuals, strengthen community ties, and promote active participation in societal and political life. With an active volunteer base in Marousi eager for expansion, our project sought to redefine volunteering's image locally, leveraging it as a catalyst for broad-based community impact and development.<< Objectives >>Our project aimed to address the heightened loneliness and isolation among young people in the post-COVID period by leveraging the power of volunteering. Our objective was to transform the challenges posed by the pandemic into opportunities for positive engagement. Specifically, we sought to enhance critical life skills and competences in young people, such as intercultural awareness, and to significantly elevate their involvement in social and civic activities through volunteering initiatives.<< Implementation >>Our project implementation encompassed a series of structured activities aimed at achieving our objectives. These activities included:Desk and Field Research: We conducted comprehensive research to identify and document best practices in volunteering.Online Kick-off Meeting: This initial meeting set the stage for the project, defining the scope and detailing the activities to be carried out.Training Sessions and Workshops: We organized two training sessions and workshops to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge for effective volunteering.Volunteerism Toolkit: We developed a toolkit to provide resources and guidelines to support volunteers and volunteer organizations.Volunteers Community Projects: These projects offered practical opportunities for volunteers to engage with their communities and apply their learning.Project Website: Managed by the project coordinator, the website served as a central hub for information, updates, and resources related to the project.Communication and Dissemination Activities: We undertook various activities to spread the word about the project and share our findings and outcomes.Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E): Continuous monitoring and evaluation.<< Results >>Our project achieved several key outputs and results, effectively meeting our set objectives:Enhanced Skills and Knowledge: We expanded the theoretical knowledge and practical skills of youth workers in our organizations, increasing their professionalism and efficiency in their roles.Youth Engagement: Successfully motivated over 50 young individuals from Greece, Finland, and Latvia to participate in civic activism, fostering a sense of responsibility and community involvement.Volunteerism Toolkit: Developed and distributed a practical guide that compiles best practices in the field of volunteering, serving as a valuable resource for both current and future volunteers and organizations.Community Awareness: Raised awareness among local communities about sustainability, encouraging more environmentally responsible behaviors.Promotion of Equality: Ensured that our activities promoted equal opportunities and access, aiming to reach young people from various backgrounds and encourage their active participation in volunteering and civic engagement.
