Kitchen STEAM: science activities and experiments that are safe and easy to do in the classroom or at home

<< Background >>We submitted this project with the intention of promoting science among young children. We had observed that teachers often underutilized experimentation as a means of illustrating scientific concepts, likely due to concerns about cost and perceived complexity. To address this issue, we had recognized the need to develop effective science communication skills in order to engage a young audience.Our initial goal was to provide access to scientific exploration from an early age — starting as young as 2.5 years old and extending up to 12 years. This approach aimed to foster a scientific mindset and methodology by making science more accessible and inclusive.By choosing the theme of cooking, we sought to introduce scientific principles through a familiar and engaging context. In doing so, we hoped not only to captivate our students but also to encourage the dissemination of scientific curiosity and knowledge within their families.<< Objectives >>The primary objective of the STEAMKit project was to foster a passion for science and improve scientific literacy among students. We successfully fulfilled the requirements of the project by making science engaging, accessible, and enjoyable. Through carefully designed hands-on activities, we encouraged curiosity and strengthened critical thinking skills.All expected outcomes were achieved, and the project was carried out in full alignment with the initial goals. In addition to meeting the specified deliverables, we contributed to a lasting impact on science education by promoting a culture of responsible experimentation and inquiry-based learning.<< Implementation >>The STEAMKit pedagogical team successfully developed a set of 80 STEAM activities and experiments, each thoroughly documented and presented in video format. All activities were compiled into a portfolio, translated into four European languages—French, Dutch, Greek, and Slovenian—as well as English, ensuring open and unrestricted access for all.Science Fairs were organized in each partner school, providing students with the opportunity to showcase their creations and engage with the wider school community. Additionally, professional development sessions in DIY-STEAM were conducted, enabling teachers to act as mentors and further support the implementation of innovative STEAM practices.<< Results >>Throughout this project, we identified several positive outcomes. A simple experiment proved sufficient to initiate an understanding of fundamental physico-chemical or biological principles, often sparked by everyday questions (e.g., why salt is spread on roads during icy conditions). The activities utilized materials readily available in any kitchen—whether at school or home—and consumables that are low-cost.We also observed that this hands-on approach generated considerable enthusiasm among students in the classroom. This enthusiasm extended beyond the school environment, as families actively participated by conducting experiments at home and engaging in science fairs held at the schools.Across all partner institutions, we noted strong involvement from the teaching staff, including those who did not participate in the mobility exchanges. This widespread engagement contributed significantly to fostering team cohesion within the schools. This European science project has effectively demonstrated to all educators—even those less confident in the sciences—the ease of implementing such experiments and their vital role in the framework of explicit pedagogy.
