Analysis and prediction of wrist mobility

Proper functioning of the wrist joint is essential in performing manual tasks ranging from personal care activities to computer related tasks. To judge wrist function the analysis of 3D patterns of movement of the carpal bones in the wrist joint are crucial. Current 3D imaging methods allow only static detection of carpal bone positions and orientations. We will develop and investigate the combination of analysis of 3D dynamical wrist joint motion patterns from X-ray images with biomechanics-based diagnosis and treatment planning methods. The patient specific biomechanical model will be used for facilitation of the diagnosis as well as for outcome prediction of surgical procedures. The proposed approach is expected to facilitate early recognition of wrist problems with improved results of surgical treatment. The knowledge generated during this project is also beneficial for diagnosis and therapy planning of other complex joint systems like the ankle. End users of the methods are radiologists and surgeons. Direct users of the developed technology and methodology are medical equipment companies who benefit from the developments on dynamic wrist imaging and surgical planning methodology. To this end we established a collaboration with Philips Medical Systems.
