Social differentiation and peasant strategies under the economic reforms in the Red River Delta region, Vietnam.

Over the last decade, the reform process (doi moi) in Viet Nam has resulted in remarkable economic performance but has also accelerated social differentiation, particularly in rural areas where a rather egalitarian system of resource allocation and wealth distribution prevailed until then. The project will analyse at the local level the process and mechanisms of social differentiation experienced in the transition towards more liberal market economy in a selected village in the Red River Delta. It will also identify the emerging rural social groups who either take advantage of or are left behinc in the transition process and their respective strategies in response to changes.
