Reading proficiency among Dutch students has been declining for years: more and more 15-year-olds struggle to understand texts, limiting their academic and future opportunities. Reading enjoyment is also decreasing, partly due to a lack of motivation. High-quality discussions about texts can help: they improve comprehension, encourage knowledge sharing, and boost motivation. It is essential that these conversations allow for interpretation, personal experiences, and reflection. While initiatives exist to promote reading discussions, implementing them effectively in the classroom remains challenging. This research therefore develops an observation tool and teacher manual to enhance reading conversations and support effective reading instruction.
