Description
The aim is to make a 21-cm line study of neutral hydrogen (HI) in bright Sa and Sb galaxies with the WSRT to study the mass distribution in these systems. As suggested by Casertano and Van Gorkom (1997) one may expect that compact galaxies of this type predominantly have declining rotation curves outside the optical radius. But, because Sas and Sbs are generally poor in HI only a few cases are known to date. With the large increase in sensitivity of the WSRT one can make a fresh attack at this problem. The observations will be carried out as part if the WHISP (Westerbork survey of HI in Irregular and Spiral galaxies) survey.
