The DESTRESS project studies how climate change, water use, pollution, and urbanisation affect river ecosystems across Europe. By analysing long-term data from over 2,000 river sites in 23 countries, the research identifies how changes in water flow and quality impact freshwater biodiversity. The goal is to define a “Safe Operating Space” for sustainable water use that protects river life while meeting human needs. DESTRESS will provide practical guidance to help policymakers and water managers balance biodiversity protection with freshwater supply and food production.
