Description
Most Offshore Wind Farms (OWF) in the Northsea are located in sandy areas. Their foodwebs are more diverse and less stable than in surrounding areas. Organisms living on the turbines take up ~30 % of food from the water column, and cause a significant enrichment of the sediment surrounding the pylons. Sand waves are prominent features in OWFs. We established their migration patterns in the Northsea. While sandwave migration is usually small, one storm has the same effect as 20 years of calm conditions. We also investigated the regeneration of sandwaves after dredging of the seafloor.
