The object of study in this project is Benfords Law. The law states that mantissae of numbers tend to follow a logarithmic distribution. From March 1st, 2006, Jesse Dorrestijn, a student of the Universiteit Utrecht, is working on this topic in connection with the writing of his Master thesis under the supervision of Dr. Karma Dajani. Stimulated by the article "A statistical derivation of the significant-digit law", Statistical Science 10, 354--363 (1996),written by Ted Hill, an attept has been made at solving an open problem stated in this article. Namely the problem which distributions have logarithmic mantissae distributions. After some research contacts has been made with Ted Hill, an expert on this topic, working at Georgia Institute of Technology. In May 2007 Ted Hill will be in Holland and will work together with Jesse Dorrestijn and Dr. Karma Dajani. Of course the participation of Ted Hill will be of great value and that is the reason for the request for an allowance for hotel expenses.
