The overall program focuses analysing and developing strategies for the transition of the current transport system to a more sustainable transport system. We apply and improve the back casting methodology for this purpose. Back casting can be seen as determining desired future images and describing ways (transition trajectories) to reach these future images. In project A and B of this program possible transition trajectories are explored, designed and evaluated. The central question of this project (C) is how the results from project A and B can be used to design and evaluate (successful) implementation strategies of the identified transition trajectories. the main goal of project C is to support policy making by: - the development of implementation strategies with long term focus (LT-IS); - the analysis of the mix of policy instruments available (or to be developed) that could be used to implement the proposed strategies; - identification of near term actions that are needed to realise the desired future images of sustainable energy systems. An important element of this project are workshops organised within the context of the Utrecht Policy Laboratory during which policy makers, key actors from the transport industry and other actors involved can have an input and experiment and evaluate the proposed strategies and instrument portfolios.
