Researchers have investigated the coupling of matter (organic and 2D semiconductors) with light confined in nanoparticles. New particles, known as polaritons, emerge from this coupling. These particles are half-matter half-light, having fascinating properties. Some of the investigated properties are the condensation of polaritons, leading to very efficient laser-like emission, or the propagation of polaritons over very long distances. These properties can be exploited for the realization of better devices, such as organic solar cells or lasers. A start-up company has been also established, focusing on the development of technology for the characterization of nanostructured surfaces.
