Within the context of the programme’s problem definition three questions will be addressed: 1) Which views, roles and practices characterise the performance of the RIVM Environmental Division with regard to research and policy advisement? How did these views, roles and practices develop since 1975? 2) How can the views, roles and practices identified under question 1 be understood with reference to the institutional history of the RIVM environmental division and / or RIVM relations to other research institutes in the Netherlands or abroad? 3) What theoretical notions and hypotheses are fit to capture the findings with respect to the questions 1 and 2?
