This project aims at assessing and re-evaluating the methodological and theoretical frameworks for first language attrition research, and at developing a widely applicable research design in order to provide a more unified and solid basis that subsequent studies can draw upon. On the basis of data collected and elicited by various methods, the relative validity of drawing conclusions from specific kinds of data will be tested. It will furthermore be seen whether findings arrived at on the basis of different data and on different linguistic levels correlate statistically. This will permit us to put language attrition studies on a more comparable basis, and will also provide a useful methodological framework for language contact studies in general. For this purpose, data will be collected from L1 attriters of German and Dutch in Anglophone Canada, augmented by data on various languages (English, Russian, German) collected for collaborating projects at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, Trinity College Dublin and the Heinrich-Heine Universität Düsseldorf and shared across the research network. The crosslinguistic approach will make it possible to compare findings from different languages and therefore come to more general conclusions. It will also allow re-assessment of findings from previous studies of language attrition, and provide a framework of research for subsequent studies to adopt. It is hoped that the emphasis which this project places both on standardization of methods and on international cooperation will act as a stimulus that may continue to bring together researchers worldwide, and encourage them to contribute to the development of a more unified framework of research. The research described hereunder will be conducted by a researcher (UD) with a full-time, tenured position (of which 0.4 research time) at the Faculteit der Letteren, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, in collaboration with an AiO currently doing a PhD on L1 attrition under the author´s supervision.
