Popularly imagined as the technology “to produce almost anything from anywhere”, additive manufacturing (AM) – also known as 3D printing – is revolutionizing manufacturing by changing what, how and where firms produce. However, the lack of data is limiting our understanding of how AM affects local economies. In this project, I will develop (and make freely available) a database to track the adoption of AM in the US. Combining geocoded firm-level information on international trade in 3D printing machineries and online job postings related to AM, the data will provide key insights on the local impacts of this new technology.
