The goal of the data investment is to build a large-scale longitudinal survey to study integration processes among recently arrived migrants to the Netherlands. Relatively little is known about the integration processes in the first few years after migration, which are considered essential for successful integration in the host society. To understand these processes, the two-wave Dutch New Immigrant Survey (NIS-SCIP), was developed and coordinated by the applicants. We propose to add new waves, making it the first four-wave new migrant survey worldwide. Moreover, extending the survey with a refreshment sample (NIS-2NL), the data will provide sufficient power to study integration processes over a period of five years after migration and compare the integration processes across groups. The study focuses on a more established migrant group (Turks) and new migrant groups from Eastern Europe (Poles and Bulgarians). The refreshment sample provides the opportunity to compare these three groups that are entering under varying economic conditions at the time of migration and compare them with a Southern European migrant group (Spaniards). We sample recent migrants from the population register, warranting representativeness of the registered new migrant population. With its longitudinal design, covering the period of the first five years after arrival in the Netherlands, the project offers unique opportunities to answer questions about the interrelations between structural, social, and cultural integration, and provides critical input for integration-related policies.
