This research deals with gambling organisations and the regulation of gambling in the European Union (EU). During the 1990s in many countries gambling markets have been liberalised and expanded significantly. However, this development contradicts traditional gambling policies in which gambling markets are tightly controlled by the state. This research addresses theoretically from a complexity theory perspective, and methodically through case studies, the differences in gambling regimes across the EU and the interactions with the newly emerging regulatory force of the EU. The outcomes of this research will be of value to debates on Europeanisation and on the liberalisation of gambling.
