Cognitive assessment in children is critical. However, severe motor disabilities (e.g., in cerebral palsy) can hinder traditional motor control-based testing procedures. This project tried to address this problem by developing a brain-based approach replacing motor actions with control of hemodynamic brain signals (as measured with functional near-infrared spectroscopy and functional magnetic resonance imaging) to answer cognitive test tasks. Affected children could soon benefit from this promising approach.
