Anxiety disorders are commonly treated using exposure therapy in which safety behaviours (SBs) are prevented. However, several studies show unaffected and even enhanced effects of exposure therapy when SBs were used. We will investigate whether the negative effects of SBs depend on whether or not they interfere with the disconfirmation of the CSàUS relationship, and under what conditions SBs are bad or innocuous for the effects of ERP. An additional mechanism of approach behaviour induced by SBs will be investigated. Effects on the acceptability of treatment and inclination to drop out in patients will be examined.
