Eccentric agreement and cliticization:: The division of labor between morphology, syntax and their interface.

The basic issues to be collaboratively investigated at Leiden are the following: (i) Which aspects of syntax and morphology are responsible for specific agreement / clitic phenomena, and what are the tools available to determine this? (ii) What are the features of the theories of syntax and morphology and their interface such that they properly include the phenomena that belong to their domains, and exclude unattested ones? (iii) What is the predicted range of variation, cross-dialectally across similar systems and cross-linguistically across different systems, made available by each module of the grammar? The results of this research bear directly on another goal of LUCL research, namely the autonomy and interaction of the cognitive modules in the language faculty.
