The research contributes to the discussion of the concept of ‘world heritage’. The need for this research emerges from the contradiction between the already existing UNESCO world heritage list and the perception of heritage as a ‘contested resource’. The research aims to answer two main questions: "How does a site become world heritage? And, what are the consequences of listing for the site and its surroundings on the one hand, and for the global community on the other?"
