Explaining the Role and Relevance of Transnational Rule-making Organizations in Global Sustainability Politics. Contributions to a Theory of Transnational Governance

Within the last 25 years, a large number of new transnational rule-making organizations have emerged within a broader field of non-state-driven political processes in which issues are defined, rules are made, and compliance is monitored. Scholars have paid attention to the larger picture of "post-international politics", but so far only few studies have tried to analyze the actual impacts of the new transnational rule-making organizations in more detail. This project fills this gap by developing a theoretical framework on the scope conditions for effective transnational organization and by carefully examining a set of hypotheses derived from institutional and organizational theory.
