Description
Caterpillars live a dangerous life. In this project we investigated how the sense of smell helps caterpillars of the Large Cabbage White butterfly to find a safe place to feed and develop. When we analyzed the function of different genes related to the sense of smell, we found that the most common genes were tuned to compounds that help caterpillars and butterflies to avoid their enemies. Through this project we have gained novel insights into the ecology of the Large Cabbage White butterfly, which could be used for developing environmentally friendly management strategies based on the caterpillar’s natural avoidance behavior.
