The design, control and operation of electric power systems are undergoing significant changes. The environmental policies govern the society towards zero-carbon emission by 2050 with energy production based only on renewable energy sources. The utilization of large amount of renewables is related to massive use of power electronic devices, multi-terminal HVDC and especially in the Netherlands, a large amount of long AC/DC cables. The increased system complexity is in line with the increased level of disturbances that power system becomes vulnerable to, especially in terms of power quality and security of supply; factors that significantly influence system reliability and stability. Therefore, power systems are exposed to different disturbances that need to be detected, classified and localized. Hence, there is a need for continuous monitoring of voltage and current waveforms. This project deals with developing a new big data energy management system platform: • a novel high-resolution time-synchronized measurement system to provide real time wide-system observability, • an advanced big-data management platform to support measurement data collection, processing and sharing among stakeholders, In this context, the following aspects will be considered: • Event detection by applying PMUs, SASensor, and newly developed Signal Measurement Unit • Event classification (switching events, power swings, dynamic (in)stability) from measured data. • Disturbance classification based on the origin of event. • Emergency network separation. • Real-time grid vulnerability assessment and forecasting. • Validation of developed algorithms/applications and hardware/software in the loop testing by actual data.
